Barn Fire Safety Checklist
Barn fires can spread quickly, putting people, animals, and property at risk. A few simple precautions can help reduce the risk.
BARN FIRE SAFETY CHECK:
Keep heat lamps and space heaters a safe distance from anything that can burn, and make sure heaters are on a sturdy surface where they can’t tip over.
Use electrical equipment designed for agricultural or commercial use. Check wiring regularly for damage, and don’t use extension cords in the barn.
Make sure lightbulbs have protective covers to help prevent dust, moisture, and breakage from becoming hazards.
Keep dust and cobwebs away from electrical outlets and lights, and make repairs promptly when damage is found.
Store feed, hay, straw, and flammable liquids away from the main barn when possible. Store oily rags in a closed metal container away from heat.
Keep the barn smoke-free.
Keep exits clearly marked and pathways clear of obstructions.
Keep ABC fire extinguishers near exits and within 50 feet of any point in the barn. Make sure everyone who uses the barn knows where they are and how to use them.
Have an evacuation plan and practice it regularly with everyone who uses the barn. Remember: if a fire occurs, personal safety comes first.
Consider fire alarm, sprinkler, and carbon monoxide detection systems where appropriate, and talk with your local fire department about safety concerns specific to your property.Take a few minutes to walk through your barn and look for potential hazards. Prevention starts with noticing the little things before they become a big problem.
